2 inmates captured, 2 still at large after Louisiana jail escape

Two out of four inmates who escaped a Louisiana jail over Memorial Day weekend have been caught.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office said Omarion Hookfin, 19, Avery Guidry, 19, Jamarcus Cyprian, 20, and Travon Johnson, 21, were able to escape through a weak portion on the perimeter of the fence at Parish Jail while participating in recreation time on the yard.

During a news conference, Chief Jimmy Travis said jail officials did not know about the breakouts until they received a phone call from a family member Sunday afternoon about one of the escapees.

Travis said the relative alerted them that two inmates escaped Saturday and came to the relative's house in the middle of the night trying to find a place to stay.

"It's very concerning. If the proper head counts had been conducted, we would [have] known about it immediately," Travis added.

Deputies reported on Monday that two of the escaped inmates, Johnson and Guidry, were captured after they were found hiding in a dumpster behind a Dollar General Store. The pair are connected to a 2022 homicide in Hammond.

Hookfin, who was arrested on the same 2022 homicide charges, and Cyprian, who was serving time for armed robbery and weapon charges, are still at large, according to reports.

Travis said the investigation into the inmates escaping is ongoing as investigators review evidence and clues.

He added that several issues facilitated the escape including lack of correctional supervision and the wire on the yard being weakened through corrosion.

"We had a failure within that we hope to correct and move forward," Travis said.
