Don started his show business career at the age of six when he attended his older brother Bob to the children's radio program in which Bob sang. When the producer heard that Don could sing as well, he had Don Audition for the program, entitled 'Coast to Coast on the Bus'. This exposure led to a part in the national company of Life With Father in 1941. Don toured with the company for three years and has acted ever since.

Don made his Broadway debut in the 1944 production of I Remember Mama. He has also done Off-Broadway, touring with musicals. After working sporadically in theater and television, Don turned to television full time. He also guest starred in a number of television series until he started work in daytime television, in 1956. In addition to his acting ability, Don is a talented writer and longstanding member of the Writer's Guild. Don has actually written the scripts for As the World Turns from 1971-72 and also has written for Guiding Light . Don is married to actress Leslie Denniston. They live in New York State with their daughter, Katharine Scott Hastings (b. 9/23/82). Don also has two daughters, Jennifer and Julie, and a son, Matthew, from a previous marriage. Don's hobbies include travel and golf.
