The Origin Story
Big Scarr was born Alexander Woods on April 7, 2000, in Memphis, Tennessee.
He grew up in the Magnolia community of South Memphis and has eight siblings.
Alexander’s grandmother raised him until he was thirteen, until she passed away from lung cancer, and he moved in with his father.
Scarr attributes his father as the person who gave him the knowledge to move with confidence through a dangerous world.
When he was 16, Scarr was in a car accident that threw him through the windshield of a friend’s vehicle.
He walked away from the accident, but the misadventure left him with quite a few scars, including the one down one side of his face that gave him the inspiration for his stage name.
More misfortune followed in 2020 when he was hospitalized after being shot in the hip, with the bullet entering his spine. “The doctors had to split me down the middle to save me,” Woods explained in a press release.
The projectile’s trajectory meant Woods had to have his appendix removed and his right leg put back into alignment.
Big Scarr says on his website that he recovered much faster than he thought he would.
Woods got his motivation to enter the rapping music business by listening to songs from Kodak Black and dreamed of the day when he would make a name for himself.
Career
Scarr was not historically interested in music or rap, preferring to spend his time on other pursuits. However, his friend, the rapper Baby K, gradually managed to arouse Scarr’s interest in rap, and he put out his first track on YouTube in 2019.
The track, entitled Make A Play, attracted 50,000 views and marked Scarr as a young up-and-comer worth watching.
Scarr later recalled the small amounts that went into Make A Play; the music video cost around $200 to film and produce, and the song itself cost $20 to record.
From these humble beginnings, Scarr was able to forge a career.
Scarr signed to the hip-hop label 1017 Records in 2020. In 2021 he released his biggest hit, SolcyBoyz, alongside the rapper Foogiano and Scarr’s own cousin, Pooh Shiesty.
He followed up the hit songs with sequels entitled Solcyboyz 2 and Solcyboyz 3. The latter release featured the rapper Gucci Mane, which raised Scarr’s profile further.
Scarr released his debut mixtape in April 2021.
It sold 22,000 copies in its first week and charted in the Billboard Top 200, peaking at #25. The mixtape, entitled Big Grim Reaper, featured Gucci Mane once again, alongside some other noted rappers such as Baby K, Pooh Shiesty, Foogiano, and Tay Keith.
Scarr followed up Big Grim Reaper with sophomore effort Big Grim Reaper: The Return. He was once again able to attract some major talent as guest rappers, including Gucci Mane, Queez Ruthless and Offset.
Scarr continued to gain fame and recognition throughout 2021 and into 2022.
He was selected by US rap magazine XXL as part of their freshman class, and performed in a rap battle to commemorate the event.
He was also included as a special guest on the Glockoma tour of US rapper Key Glock.
Death & Cause of Death
Big Scarr died on December 22nd, 2022.
