Catherine Élise Blanchett was born on May 14, 1969, in Ivanhoe, a suburb of Melbourne, to an American father and an Australian mother. Cate is of English descent, with distant French and Scottish ancestry. She has two siblings, an older brother, Bob, and a younger sister, Geneviève.

Cate’s father Robert DeWitt Blanchett Jr. was a United States Navy petty officer. After his retirement, he also worked as an advertising manager. He died in 1979 when Cate was just 10 years old. His mother, June Blanchett (née Gamble), worked as a teacher and real estate developer.
