Johnstown woman who lied about having cancer sentenced to probation
Cambria Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities with the Cambria County District Attorney's office confirmed to 6 News that a local woman who was accused of lying about having cancer in order to raise money has been sentenced.
Officials say Brandi Hammers was sentenced to 84 months of probation on Thursday.
In May, Hammers pleaded guilty to one felony count of theft by deception.
She was arrested and charged last February following a months-long investigation into her alleged fraudulent activity.
Authorities say the community reportedly raised thousands of dollars to help Hammers with her alleged medical treatments for stomach cancer prior to the revelation that she was faking the illness.
Investigators say multiple tipsters told authorities that they learned through Hammers' insurance provider that there was no record of her being treated for cancer.
