Employee accused of stealing more than $50k from a Elk County insurance company

ST. MARYS, Pa. - An employee at an Elk County-based insurance company has been accused of stealing more than $50,000 from the company.

Jane Chelgreen, 63, has been charged with several counts of theft.

According to police, Chelgreen worked at Nicklas Insurance in St. Mary's and stole from the company from 2014 until 2018. Police said Chelgreen would take money when customers paid cash and pocket the money without reporting it.

Police said in some instances, she would keep some of the money and deposit the rest.

According to the complaint, she would then modify accounts and deposits on the computer system to cover her tracks.

Police said after reviewing the records, Chelgreen is believed to have stolen more than $50,000 since 2014.

According to police, during an interview, Chelgreen admitted to stealing from the company over the past 15 years.

Chelgreen has a preliminary hearing set for June 19.
