Girl Scout camp set to close March 31 in Jefferson County
BROCKWAY - Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania announced Tuesday that they'll be closing four camps across the state on March 31, including Camp Curry Creek in Jefferson County.
GSWPA said Camps Elliott, Curry Creek, Resting Waters, Roy Weller and Singing Hills are closing and will be sold due to membership and expenses.
"Currently, only about 13 percent of council membership attend camp, and overall, camps bring in revenue of approximately $600,000 but have expenses of nearly $2 million," a press release from GSWPA said.
GSWPA said four camps will stay open that are accessible to different areas within their council: Conshatawba in Cambria County, Hawthorne Ridge in Erie County, Redwing in Butler County and Skymeadow in Armstrong County.
Troop leader Marcie Brubaker has attended Curry Creek since she was a Daisy. She said she's upset the decision was made before giving the girls a fighting chance.
"Some of my best friends and I attended this camp when I was 5-years-old in kindergarten," Brubaker said. "It's definitely a lot more than just a camp. It's a place where friendships, bonds and memories are formed that you can never forget."
Supporters of the camp have started a Facebook page in an effort to save the camp. They said they aren't fighting the fact that GSWPA wants to sell the property, but are fighting to keep it a Girl Scout camp.
