Jeff Tech adds new diesel and heavy equipment program
REYNOLDSVILLE, Pa. - A new program for students interested in diesel engine mechanics started this year at the Jefferson County-Dubois Area Vocational-Technical School (Jeff Tech).
The Diesel and Heavy Equipment class is an instructional program that prepares students to apply technical knowledge and skills to the specialized maintenance and repair of trucks, buses, and other commercial and industrial vehicles.
Instructor Mike Keener said 16 students have enrolled.
"More and more of the local businesses are in need for mechanics in the diesel field," Keener said. "So Jeff Tech is going about and starting a class."
Administrative Director Barry Fillman said Legacy Trucking and Barber Trucking were instrumental in getting the program started. The companies donated money, gear and helped with the curriculum.
"I think it's interesting, it's a new program and hopefully I can get a job in this field when I get older," 9th grader Owen Gardner said.
Students will get a variety of hands on experience including instruction in diesel engine mechanics, suspension and steering, brake systems, electrical and electronic systems, preventive maintenance inspections, drive trains, HVAC systems and auxiliary equipment installation and repair.
"The main reason I wanted to take this class is because my dad was in it for so many years and I just take interest in big trucks and stuff," 9th grader Josh Light said.
Keener said when students are seniors, they will be able to achieve their CDL license.
