Lake Mahopac Bustles With Boats As Summer Weather Begins

Publish date: 2024-09-06

Richard Hall, a Westchester resident and firefighter, has been boating on Lake Mahopac for five seasons.

He primarily boats with his wife and two-year-old son, but was out Sunday, June 29, with fellow firefighters, friends and family.

"Lake Mahopac is a really great place," Hall said. "They're all really nice people here and we're all good friends. Everyone gets along and everyone respects each other."

Hall was excited to soak up the sun after a stretch of cool and rainy weather.

"Unfortunately it took a little while for the nice weather to show up but, once it did, its been great," he said.

Hall's boat took off from MacDonald Marine, which is operated by second generation owners Ken and Jacqui MacDonald.

Just one look at MacDonald Marine shows how popular boating is on Lake Mahopac. The marina, which the MacDonald family has owned for 47 years, holds 75 dock slips -- almost all of which are occupied on weekends. Additionally, they do boat rentals.

"Our weekends are totally packed," Jacqui said. "But, people come out during the week too. People go fishing, and there's bass fishing tournaments on the weekends."

Ken said a survey done approximately 10 years ago showed there are as many as 700 boats docked around Lake Mahopac.

"On any given day, you'll see 50 to 100 boats out there," he said.

However, their busiest day of the year has yet to come.

"Fourth of July at night is the most popular time," Ken said. "It seems like every boat docked on the lake is out then."
