Authorities say a Philadelphia officer was shot and killed while serving a warrant on a suspect wanted for homicide.

City police say 46-year-old Cpl. James O’Connor was serving the warrant early Friday morning at a home along Bridge Street when someone opened fire through a closed door on the second floor.

According to NBC affiliate WCAU, O'Connor was taken to Temple University Hospital where he died.

WCAU reports another SWAT officer returned fire, striking two people. They were taken to Einstein Medical Center in stable condition.

Authorities say the SWAT team was attempting to arrest 21-year-old Hassan Elliott, who was wanted for a 2019 robbery and murder. Police say he was not hurt during the exchange of gunfire.

WCAU reports that Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner intends to file charges against Elliott for the 2019 case and additional charges for this morning's incident.

Gov. Tom Wolf and other local leaders expressed their sympathies following the deadly shooting.

This morning’s shooting is a reminder of the dangers men and women in law enforcement face every day and the sacrifices they make to keep our communities safe." Wolf said. "My thoughts are with the family of Corporal O’Connor, members of the Philadelphia Police Department, and everyone affected by this act of violence. More information, including funeral arrangements, will be released when appropriate. Frances and I join all Pennsylvanians in mourning the officer’s tragic death.

Police say O'Connor was a 23-year veteran of the department and a 15-year veteran of the SWAT unit.
