Pike 2 Bike trail, known as abandoned turnpike, undergoes cleanup
BREEZEWOOD – The Pike 2 Bike trail in Bedford and Fulton counties, known as the abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike, got a major cleanup Thursday morning.
More than two dozen employees from Bedford-based REI, Inc. teamed up with the Pike 2 Bike steering committee members to sweep, dig, sweep, trim and paint the 8 1/2-mile recreational trail.
The trail includes two full length concrete tunnels and provides a glimpse into the past history of the highway.
“After closing in 1968, the Pennsylvania Turnpike tested futuristic paint, reflectors and rumble strips on the trail,” steering committee chairman John Carlin said.
“These have been covered up for years and Thursday we are once again making them visible to the users of the trail.
“I consider it an outside interpretive classroom as much as an exercise or leisure parkway,” Carlin said.
