PSU trustees approve tuition freeze for in-state, commonwealth campus students; employee raises on h
University Park, PA (WJAC) — For many Penn State students, close to 18,000 of them, there will be no tuition increase for the next two years, but in a related move, pay hikes for Penn State employees are on hold and it's all directly related to the state budget standoff.
The Penn State students who will see no tuition increases are the in-state students at Penn State's commonwealth campuses.
It’s part of the budget plan approved Friday by the Penn State trustees.
In-state students at University Park will have a two percent tuition increase.
Officials say 43 percent of all the in-state students at Penn State attend commonwealth campuses.
The university budget approval comes with a major unknown of how much the university will be receiving in its annual state funding allocation.
That issue is part of the current impasse in Harrisburg on a new state budget.
Penn State says for now, to keep the tuition increases minimal, funding is being shifted in the university budget and that’s putting a hold on employee raises.
The newly approved university budget includes a 3-percent employee salary hike that is contingent upon a state funding allocation amount that was proposed by Governor Josh Shapiro.
